Eyck, Jan van (c.1390-1441)Eyck was a Flemish painter who perfected the newly developed technique of oil painting with the development of a stable varnish created from linseed and nut oils mixed with resins. The varnish dried at a consistent rate but, more importantly, when mixed with the actual paints produced a brilliance and transparency which was perfectly suited to the portrayal of precious metals, gems and natural light. This invention transformed the appearance of painting giving it a life hitherto impossible to display. Eyck's panel paintings were mostly portraits and religious subjects, his masterpiece being the altarpiece in the Cathedral at Ghent.
